JOKES ON FAMILY GUY? - NO WAY...

On this wonderful Monday morning, I have to kick off the week by giving a big shout-out to Family Guy. Now, I’ve been an avid viewer of this show before it found new life through DVD sales, before Seth Macfarlane became a household name, before he was signing 100 million dollar deals with Fox, and before doing a bomb-ass Stewie impression at parties could get you laid.

However, it has been so long since this show has spoken to me as it did last night. If I were to break down the plot line, it would go something like this…

    KIT COPE vs RETTA SIRLEAF

Kit Cope (a professional MMA fighter for all your pacifists out there) really appreciates the non-racial jokes because they are just ‘funny and retarded.’  Too bad he doesn’t realize that all the RETARDS now think he is retarded.  Hmmmm, do you think retards use the term ‘retard’ when referring to ‘people who say stupid things?’  Eh, probably not, cause that would be retarded….So judge for yourself in the match up between Kit Cope vs Retta Sirleaf?

    UMA JOKES

I always loved the Fox force five joke thread in Pulp Fiction.

It’s not a great joke. I believe there are several tellings of it over on Jokeyphone, but this is done in a way that has so much emotional resonance and it’s really used as a link to the characters for Tarantino, and an easy way to give his small talk context. Earlier in the scene as the fifties diner as they wolf down burgers Thurman’s character sets it up and tells him about a pilot he did called Fox Force Five. Her character tells a joke. She refuses to tell Travolta the joke as she’s sure he won’t laugh. Later after a horrible night where she almost died from a heroin overdose, and he sees his life come to an end as she’s his crazy bosses wife, he drops her off and as she goes inside she finally gives up the joke, and sure enough he doesn’t laugh. It’s not that he’s a stronger man that to be tempted by her charm, it’s that fate has played the night out in a way that the deck is now stacked in his favor. He has what it takes to walk away.

    SCARE TACTICS: Satin's Baby

Candid Camera, created by Allen Funt, which initially began on radio as Candid Microphone began in 1947.  The premise always involves concealed cameras filming unsuspecting people confronted with unusual stations, and no one can appreciate that kind of entertainment more than a viewer watching from the comfort of their own couch.  With humor putting people in fabricated situation, the show was the precursor to the more recent wave of prank shows, such as Punk’d, Boiling Point, and The Jamie Kennedy Experiment (to name a few).  Scare Tactics, currently on the Syfy network brings the practical joke show to a whole new level, by sprinkling it with pure EVIL.  The Satin’s baby prank is CRAZY, and all I have to say is that this girl has a cruel mother (Oh, and if I were her, I would be scarred for life).  It is funny though, so if you dare – enjoy the clip.

    OBAMA IS FUNNNNNNY

Back in June, President Obama spoke at the Radio & Television Correspondents Dinner, and if you missed his speech, it is absolutely worth checking out, since (IMHO) this is the closest a President has come to having a legitimate stand up act (in the first half of the speech he is on FIRE).  Featuring political and topical humor, the black-tie dinner at the Washington Convention Center was the group’s 65th annual gathering of journalists, politicians and their guests.

TOP 10 PRACTICAL JOKES - ESPN

My husband is a sports freak, and it is a rare occasion when ESPN is not on in the background of my everyday life.  Other than knowing random facts about the Atlanta Braves or Atlanta Falcons (which always surprise me when they fly out of my mouth, do you know Chipper Jones’s real name is Larry) I have truly come to appreciate ESPN’s sense of humor (they have the BEST commercials on TV) as well as their beloved top 10 lists.  The clip below does not fail to impress and for what it’s worth, you should wait for 1 on the list, it’s great!

    2O SOMETHING BETTERS - ROXANNE

469357.1020.AEveryone knows the movie Roxanne (but if you don’t, walk away from the computer and go watch it right now).  Steve Martin is in his prime, Daryl Hannah is also on a roll (between this, Splash, and Steel Magnolias I could kiss her) and of course the story is the modernisation of Edmond Rostands, Cyrano De Bergerac, which is only a good thing.  It’s a romantic comedy that essentially centers around one BIG nose joke, and even though making fun of people can be cruel, the moral of the story is (of course) it’s what’s inside that counts – but let’s be honest, without edge and cruelty, nice on the inside isn’t funny.  Right?  Right!  Well, in the movie there is a great scene where Steve Martin list’s off 25 nose insults, they are one lines and they are brilliant (Paranoid is my favorite – Keep that guy away from my cocaine!).

PEOPLE I LIKE - Stephen Fry

This is a funny bit of goofy patter from the great Stephen Frye. I’m a huge fan.

I once did a movie in London (start at 7 minutes 30 seconds) that he was in two or three scenes and stole the whole movie. He’s done that a lot. He’s also got a great

website. He’s got a billion twitter followers as well. He’s truly jumped into the web thing with both feet and we’re all the better for it. The guy doesn’t know how to be not funny. All his stuff is good and at the very least interesting.

    EXCUSES - MAKE THEM LAUGH!

So let’s say you are late for work (like, really late) and even if you have a valid excuse, it’s happened so many times your boss is starting to give up on you.  Are you people out there?  I know you are, and this one’s for you!  Well, (if I may) let me suggest a new angle – have you ever considered changing your ‘excuse book’ (kinda like a play book for athletes).  Instead of  making an effort trying to get places on time (cause it ain’t working) spend time coming up with funny excuses.  I predict that if you are late for the 100th time, but have a joke ready about why, you will actually get a free pass, and your boss (who hates you) might just keep you around cause you’re funny (but don’t quote me on that).  If the CRAZY

Jeff Lewis (who I LOVE) can endure his interns excuse for being late – anything is possible (see below).
